30 days of sketching

On the 6th of June, I began a small challenge for mysel. Sketching challenge. I like sketching, even though I am not good at it. And I am actually afraid of putting my sketches here, where you can see them. They are not good. Sometimes you might even not recognize what I tried to draw. However, I have to put them here. I need to get comfortable with sharing them. It is part of what I do and I cannot let my fear to stop me.

The outline for the challenge was; two minutes for each picture, no more. During two minutes you can convey the basic shape and idea about an image. That’s fine for me. These pictures are not for a gallery. Architects draw to capture an idea or pass a message. If you can get what I meant, that should be enough. I drew one object from around my flat and one house a day. I started with the object and the house followed. Every day, sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the evening after work. Once or twice I did not have time or I forgot, so I drew one more the next day, but it is my challenge so I can break it.

And a month passed. Maybe you can see how the sketches were influenced by the pre-exam stress. Or maybe you can (I don’t) see that my sketching got better every day. Some object were easier, some were harder. Now that I look at them, I can see that round shapes are especially hard for me. Some days, I was definitely more focused than other days.

And more or less. I did it. I finished what I started and I will continue with this challenge. And I encourage you to try it aswell! It takes just 5 minutes each day (or you can set up your own rules – time, theme, what to draw with). You can find few minutes each day, everybody says that they do not have time for this or that. But they do not need to find hours for most things. Start small, assign few minutes every day. Quick sketch after breakfast or before you go to sleep. And in a month, it is a pretty solid base.
